Let’s be honest — you clicked “About” because you either want to know if I’m a real person or you’re trying to figure out if you can trust me. Both are fair. I’ll do my best on both counts.

So, Who Are You Exactly?

I’m Ryan Hearn. I live on California’s Central Coast, which is either paradise or an elaborate conspiracy to make people okay with expensive rent — the jury’s still out. I write about the things I’m genuinely thinking about: adjusting to major life changes, the insurance industry, and whatever projects I’ve decided are a good idea this month.

I started this blog because I had things to say and no one was stopping me. That’s still largely the case.

The Resume Bit (Abridged)

I went to law school because I was under the impression that I wanted to be a lawyer. Law school cured me of that. What it didn’t cure me of was an obsession with fine print, contracts, and the specific kind of satisfaction that comes from actually understanding what you signed.

That obsession found a better home in the insurance industry. I’ve spent years as a licensed California Life Insurance Broker (CA License #0L14758), which means I’m the person who reads the policy documents so you don’t have to — and then explains them in plain English, ideally without putting anyone to sleep. If you’re a California resident and need term life coverage, you can find that side of my life over at TermQuotesCalifornia.com.

The Part Where I Mention I’m Blind

A few years ago, I lost my vision. I’ll pause here while you process that, because most people do.

Done? Great.

It’s been a significant chapter, and I write about adjusting to blindness honestly on this blog — not because I want your sympathy, but because it’s genuinely interesting terrain and I figure someone out there is going through something similar and could use a voice that isn’t relentlessly inspirational. I’m not here to give a TED Talk. I’m here to tell you what it’s actually like, including the parts that are frustrating, funny, and occasionally absurd.

The short version: blindness is part of my life. It’s not the whole story. I use technology to do basically everything, I’ve developed opinions about screen readers that I will share whether you ask or not, and I still have the same unhealthy interest in fine print I’ve always had — I’ve just outsourced the reading of it.

What This Blog Is

This is a personal site. It’s where I think out loud about the things that matter to me — life transitions, projects I’m building, and the occasional observation about the world that I can’t get out of my head. I’m not trying to be an influencer. I’m not building a brand. I’m just a guy with a law school education, a broker’s license, and a lot of thoughts.

If something I write resonates with you, I’d genuinely love to hear about it. The contact form works. I read everything.

The Fine Print (Obviously)

Nothing on this site is legal or financial advice. I know, I know — I went to law school and I sell insurance for a living. But this is a blog, not a consultation, and you deserve the reminder. For advice specific to your situation, talk to an actual professional. Depending on the topic, that might even be me — but let’s start here first.

Welcome to the site. I’m glad you’re here.
